IL BASTONE MAGICO - THE MAGIC STICK

Proprio niente. E i suoi piccoli?

THE MAGIC STICK

The church was peaceful. Francesco, deep in his thoughts, was seated in the last pew of Santa Marta's church. He had left home really early. He hadn’t managed to sleep all night and, walking along the side streets in Gozzano, he had decided to go there to pray. God wouldn't help him to pay all his debts, but at least he'd be able to give him the strength to face that hard day. In fact the day after, a mid-July Monday, the last instalment of his loan would expire. If he managed to pay it, his house would become his property. He had made so many sacrifices, and now, one step from achieving his dreams, all had disappeared. There wasn't any money and his despair was more than justified.
His wife had implored him to look for a job but it wasn't easy. In those times of crisis nobody needed employees, if anything they were reducing salaries. But the disappointed, grieved, resigned look of his sad wife wrenched his heart. Why wasn't he able to make his family happy? What had he done wrong? Nothing at all. And his children? They suffered hunger much more than the two of them. They would remain poor forever, there was nothing to do.
His sad thoughts were interrupted by the entrance of a slender, almost bald old man with a bristly white beard and hollow cheeks. He held himself up with the help of a long black stick, and he carried a funny, huge, closed, brightly coloured umbrella. On his feet a pair of wooden clogs. Dwelling on his last detail, Francesco noticed that beside him there was a boy of about ten, blond, apparently calm but with a crafty look. He wore the same footwear as the old man.
Francesco asked  himself what they were doing in the church at 6.00 a.m. The old man came close to him and said: - I perceive discouragement in your look...What troubles you?-
At first Francesco looked grimly at the stranger. Then he began to pour out his troubles and talk about why he looked so bad. The man, who was called Giuseppe, listened to him, understanding. At the end of the tale, they remained silent. Then the old man spoke: ''Do you know what? This stick is magic''.
Francesco lifted an eyebrow and just about managed to choke a laugh. He scrutinized the child's expression and noticed with relief that he seemed surprised by the statement, too.
- Don't make fun of me, I'm serious! It can bring money and luck. -
Having said that he gave him the black stick. - After attending Mass, go home, use it responsibly and come back here tomorrow to give it back to me. I'd give you my umbrella, it possess the same magic properties, but I need it to repair me from the sun.-
Francesco listened carefully to the Mass celebrated by Padre Picco, helped by the child that was his altar boy. The concepts that the old man preached were few, but of principle importance and of intense spirituality.
Francesco didn't believe a single word of what Padre Picco had said, but to make him happy he took the object and he would bring it back the day after.
Once he was back home, Francesco leaned the stick against the wall of the sitting-room, and he went to sleep. One of his children waking up and wandering around the house noticed it. The boy's curiosity overcame his sleepiness. He took the stick and he began playing: at first it was a sword, then the sceptre of the king and finally a baseball bat.
Accidentally he hit the glass vase in the middle of the table, that fell down and broke into a thousand pieces. Lots of little pieces: they were no longer made of glass but of gold.
The parents woke up with a start because of the noise they heard. What dismayed them wasn't the broken vase but the material it was made by. The son gave them explanations and Francesco, confused, told his wife what had happened that morning.
And that’s how the family became rich in only one morning, thanks to the magic stick that could multiply money and transform all into gold.
The day after Francesco didn’t turn up at the appointment with the old man. He intended to keep the magic stick, and never, for anything at the world, he would return it to the legitimate owner.
We can say with regret that the man became stingy, and every day he wanted more. His wife was annoyed since her husband didn’t have the same care and attention for his family any more. – You have enough to eat- he said- therefore leave me alone-
A week after, Francesco was near Santa Maria’s church. He thought it proper to honour God who had helped him. In the last pew, as if he had been waiting him for the past seven days, there was Padre Picco. The faithful altar boy wasn’t with him.
– At last you have brought back what is mine- he said with emphasis. Francesco laughed, scoffing. How much his personality had changed!
– I wouldn’t even think about it- he exclaimed – I won’t give up the miracles of this object. For nothing in the world.
 – Really? Not even for your family would you make this sacrifice? Do you know what penance is? Do you know what humility is? You forgot all about this, Francesco, because of the wealth that has blinded you. When I saw you, I recognized poverty and despair in you, I caught sight of important values that aren’t there any more! I wanted to help you and for this reason you should be grateful to me, but above all to God! Shame on you, especially because you’ve hurt your family!-
At that point he lifted a finger and Francesco remembered that image, as if he had already lived the moment. He remembered that he had read it in a book, in a novel, perhaps, but the title eluded him… These words troubled him and made him think, but as soon as the old man lowered his finger, he turned on his heels and went home without saying a word. But there was nobody. The house was empty. The man panicked. He went back to Santa Maria’s church, where the old man hadn’t moved.
– Where are they? What curse have you cast on us?- he shouted.
The other calmly suggested he should give back the stick, and everything would return as it was before. They looked into one another’s eyes and Francesco understood the humility, the kindness and the richness of spirit that he had heard in the sermon the week before. His heart gave a leap, and almost mechanically, he returned the stick to its rightful owner. His clothes returned to being patched and crumpled and his wallet without a penny.
Francesco, crying, ran away, and whispered a “thank you” to Padre Picco, but  above all to God. Upon arriving home, he found his family gathered around the table in the wet kitchen. They weren’t as rich as before, but some money was left. Just enough to live while waiting to find a job. And as fate would have it,  just some days later Francesco found a job as a waiter in a restaurant. At last, in his wife’s eyes there was pride and satisfaction.
How much Francesco learned from that experience! And he owed everything to Padre Picco, whose sanctity and devotion to God will remain an example for everyone.
